Garmin Epix Pro Gen 2: Real Review from a Real User

Have you ever worn technology and felt like it just fits? That’s exactly how I felt when I put on the Garmin Epix Pro Gen 2 - like it was designed specifically for my wrist and my lifestyle. But I love being outside, moving my body, and learning more about data. So when I started researching this watch, I had high expectations. Have they lived up to those expectations? Let’s get directly to the point.

First impressions: rugged beauty

First of all, this watch is rugged. I chose the 47mm model, and it looks good on the wrist without being bulky. The titanium bezel is smooth and the sapphire crystal is beautiful. Well, that’s a sigh of relief for a clumsy person like me. The watch still looks like new, even after being banged on the doorstep and rubbed with stones. The silicone strap is comfortable enough to wear all day, but when it gets hot, I swap it out for a fabric strap. The packaging is simple but elegant, no frills. It feels like I’m opening something ready to use, not just a pretty box.

Features

This watch has not only a beautiful dial, but everything else as well. There’s no other way to put it: the AMOLED screen is fantastic. You can see everything clearly and distinctly, even in direct sunlight. Checking stats while running is a breeze. I’m a big fan of the always-on display, even if it does consume a bit of battery power. The flashlight, which I initially thought was a gimmick, has turned out to be surprisingly useful. I use it to find my keys in a dark bag, navigate around the campsite at night, and even as a safety flashlight when I’m on the trail in the evening. It’s small but very comfortable. The Elevate Gen5 heart rate sensor is very accurate and excellent. I compared it to my chest strap during an intense workout and it was very accurate. The watch also has new metrics such as endurance score and elevation score. The Endurance Score tries to account for all types of activity, not just running and cycling. The Hill Score is interesting, but I’m not quite sure yet. I often score higher than I think I should. Still, it’s great to see what the watch thinks of my efforts.

Real-world use: from city streets to mountain trails

I’ve taken this watch with me everywhere. I’ve used it to record my daily walks around town, and the accurate GPS function has told me exactly where the turns are. On a recent hike, the map with shades saved me. I could see how the terrain was changing and plan accordingly. On a long route, I also used weather radar. We saw storms approaching, so we adjusted the route to avoid them. This real-time information is what makes the watch so valuable.

Flaws and limitations: it’s not perfect

Now let’s talk about the not-so-perfect points. First of all, the price. This is a serious investment. You have to make sure you get the full functionality. In addition, the user interface is very dense. It has a huge amount of data and options that can be overwhelming at first. We had to watch tutorials and familiarize ourselves with it. I wish the weather radar was available during navigation as well as in the weather widget. That would be much more practical. The new hill and stamina metrics are interesting, but may seem a bit awkward. I would like to have an ECG function. I know it’s not available yet, but I’d like to see it in the future.

Comparison

I have used other smartwatches, including those from Apple and Samsung. The Epix Pro Gen 2 is different from them. It’s not as smooth and intuitive as the Apple Watch, but it’s much more reliable and functional. They’re made for those who take their activity seriously and want as much data as possible. Compared to the Phoenix series watches, the AMOLED screen is much improved. They are brighter, clearer and more pleasant to look at. The battery life is also impressive, especially for an AMOLED screen. We used it for 5-6 days with constant display and 2-3 hours a day with GPS. The dual-frequency GPS works perfectly and accurately, even in the shade of trees.

Final thoughts: who should buy it

So is the Garmin Epix Pro Gen 2 worth its money? If you’re a serious athlete or outdoor enthusiast who needs the best data, navigation, and tracking, then definitely. If, however, you’re just looking for a basic smartwatch, this may be overkill. This is a serious piece of kit for serious people. I am very happy with my purchase and want to continue pushing my limits with this watch on my wrist. This watch is a tool to help me get the most out of my workouts and adventures.
