Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar: Real Review

Have you ever thought that fitness watches are more of a hindrance than a help? I did for a long time. But that all changed when I got my hands on the Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar. It’s not just a gadget, it’s a tool that makes my active life easier and, dare I say it, more enjoyable.

First Reaction: Rugged and Ready to Go

Right out of the box this thing looks and feels rugged. The titanium bezel and sapphire crystal give it a premium, almost indestructible look. The weight is there but not excessive, and the strap is standard but comfortable enough to wear all day. I’ve owned several fitness trackers, and this is the first one I didn’t immediately want to change the strap with. The screen is clear even in bright sunlight, which is a big plus for those who, like me, spend a lot of time outdoors. The buttons are tactilely pleasing, and the addition of a touchscreen is a welcome upgrade.

Detailed Feature Analysis

The watch is packed with features:

  • The GPS is incredibly accurate and turns on within seconds.
  • The heart rate sensor is reliable during intense workouts.
  • The real-time endurance data still takes some getting used to, but it’s fun to see how much “gas” you have left during a run or ride.
  • I also appreciate that the device tracks a variety of activities, from running and swimming to hiking and, for a change, kiteboarding. I haven’t tried the latter activity yet, but it’s nice to know it’s there.
  • The map is simply indispensable, with detailed terrain data displayed on your wrist. This was very useful on a recent hike, as it allowed me to easily navigate the trail without having to pull out my phone.
  • The flashlight, which I initially thought was a gimmick, proved surprisingly useful as a light for searching around the house at night and for safety during early morning runs.

Practical Use

This watch has become a constant companion in my daily life. I use them for everything from logging my morning runs to tracking my heart rate at work. The watch truly shows itself when I go exploring. I recently went on a trail that wasn’t well marked, and thanks to the map on the watch, I could easily see where I needed to go. The flashlight was a lifesaver when I had to walk my dog in the dark. I also appreciate the ability to set different activity profiles. For example, I’d like to see stroke rate and pace for swimming or heart rate and distance for running. This kind of customization is incredibly useful.

Minuses and Limitations: Not Perfect

No gadget is perfect, and the Fenix 7X is no exception.

  • The price is certainly high, and it’s a significant investment.
  • The touchscreen can be a bit choppy at times, especially if your hands are wet or wearing gloves.
  • The endurance feature, while interesting, seems a bit redundant. I don’t know how useful it will be for my workouts.
  • I also wish the interface was more intuitive. It has so much data and so many options that it can be overwhelming.
  • Customizing specific data fields for new classes is a bit cumbersome, and that’s something that could be improved.
  • Also, while I like the solar charging, I don’t think it’s as revolutionary as I had hoped. The battery gets a bit bigger, but it still needs to be charged regularly.

Comparison: Stands Out From the Crowd

I’ve tried many other fitness watches, including Apple and Suunto. What sets the Fenix 7X apart is its outdoor focus and rugged design. The Apple Watch is great for everyday use, but its battery life lags far behind the Garmin and it’s less durable. The Suunto watch is good for navigation, but it lacks features and customization options like the Fenix 7X. The Garmin feels like a watch made for serious athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. They aren’t the most stylish, but they are the most functional. The multi-band GPS is another feature that outperforms most other watches, providing better accuracy, especially in hard-to-reach places.

Conclusions and Recommendations

The Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar is a great high-tech product, but it’s not for everyone. If you’re a regular user who only needs a basic step tracker, it’s probably overkill. However, for athletes who need detailed training data, people who love the outdoors and want a watch that can handle any situation, this is a great choice. The battery life is excellent, the GPS is accurate, and the flashlight is a surprisingly useful feature. The watch isn’t cheap, but if you value these features and are willing to invest the money, you won’t be disappointed. I’m very happy with this device, and it makes my active life more enjoyable. It’s worth noting that for the price of $579.99, you get great value for money. It’s an investment, but a really useful one in every way for those who need it.
